Speeding and Reckless Driving Together

Sometimes we have clients that are charged with speeding and reckless driving at the same time.  You should be aware that if you are speeding excessively, then you could be facing that additional reckless driving ticket.  Many people are confused because they admit that they are speeding, but are unsure about why they got the reckless driving charge.  With an excessive speeding charge, you can be facing a reckless driving charge automatically.

Technically, all that is needed is a person driving “carelessly and heedlessly,” and excessive speed is one aspect of that.  Often, officers may try to “pad” the charges against you to make sure that some charge sticks with you.  In the worst cases, you may have several charges against you for  DWI, speeding, and reckless driving.  Occasionally we see a fourth charge, like Driving While License Revoked or No Operating License.  When this happens, you can be sure that you need a traffic ticket lawyer representing you.

If you get charged with several different charges together, there may be a chance that a deal can be negotiated so that some of the charges against you may be dropped.  If you got speeding and reckless driving ticket, you could be facing serious consequences both for your drivers license and for your insurance premiums.  This is especially true if you have tickets on your record within the past 3 years.  If you get convicted of both offenses, you will get points for both the reckless driving and the speeding charges.  These points can add up quickly, and before you know it, your license could be revoked.

If you have a history of convictions for speeding and reckless driving, then it will be harder to negotiate a deal.  The takeaway point is that you should get traffic charges dealt with before your driving record becomes a problem.  You should deal with this when it happens so that you can get the lowest penalties possible.
