Texting While Driving Laws

A hot issue between law enforcement and drivers today is the law regarding texting and driving.  There is a huge push in the media today about the dangers of texting and driving.  Commercials on TV, banner ads on websites, and other sources of advertising warn about the potential dangers of texting while driving.  One popular statistic states that texting while driving increased the likelihood of an accident 23 times.  Teens in particular are admonished to avoid texting and driving.  This is because texting while driving is a relatively common practice among teens, and because teens are inexperienced drivers.

Because of the realization of the danger of texting and driving, many states, including North Carolina, have passed laws banning texting and driving.  In North Carolina, the penalty for texting while driving is an $100 fine, plus the costs of court.  In addition, this offense goes on the offender’s driving record.  While it is admirable that there are laws in place trying to protect motorists from distracted driving, the statutes are drafted much too broadly.
